Last year could be described as a year where we had to learn to adapt. This was no different for us at HackHub, when all of our normally in-person hackathons had to be turned virtual. Despite the pandemic, we came together to reimagine how we could still host the most fun and engaging events to support tech lovers across the globe. HackHub’s purpose is about constantly evolving, learning, and seeking innovation, and that is exactly what we did with EduHacks 2020.

EduHacks 2020 was not only the most innovative hackathon HackHub has hosted, but also drew our largest crowd since starting in 2017. As the largest in Western Canada with over 1600 participants this year, EduHacks 2020 spanned over six months where participants were tasked with creating projects to solve business problems revolving around the theme of artificial intelligence, with an emphasis on the Internet of Things, 5G Era, and STEM.

Statistics on EduHacks since its inception

EduHacks 2020 wasn’t only a one-of-a-kind event because of its scale, but because of its format. With COVID-19 preventing us from hosting regular events, HackHub in accordance with public health guidelines launched a hybrid model hackathon, where judges screened thousands of participants virtually before pairing it down to 200 teams. Judges finally invited 40 teams to move onto the 48 hour in-person final, held in Beijing, China. The finals of EduHacks 2020 brought together teams from around the world, with international schools like team LJC from SFU creating a student sign-in system, and team Green Hat Group from UBC receiving excellence awards for their performance.

Bringing together experts in the fields of artificial intelligence, security, education, judges and speakers not only evaluated teams and their projects, but provided first hand opportunities to network with new peers and senior professionals, teach new skills, and potentially recruit new talent into world renown tech firms. On top of $20,000 in prizes for our finalists, EduHacks 2020 was HackHub’s largest and most successful event to date.

Grand Prize Winners of EduHacks2020

“When we started EduHacks, we only had one goal: to have fun and learn. We were interested in the topics that the hackathon covered and wanted to expand our skillset. As a result, we dove into this competition with the mindset of learning new technologies. Using the HackHub platform, we liked how there was a section to learn additional material or review information from the hackathon. The search functionality of the website allowed users to create tags for a variety of skills, making duplicates and random tags available for selection. Overall, it was a great interface to use as we participated in the competition!”

Together with the participants, judges, speakers, sponsors, and supporters who made this event a reality, we’re proud to be the hackathon platform management system of choice making EduHacks 2020 possible. Bringing together thousands of participants across the globe to solve real-world problems during turbulent times is how we innovated last year, and this year, we’re not showing any signs of slowing down.
